EMPOWER BRIGHTER FUTURES FOR THE CHILDREN OF LIV DURBAN BY JOINING OUR SOLAR PROJECT FUNDRAISER

LIV DURBAN PLACES VULNERABLE AND ORPHANED CHILDREN INTO A FAMILY ENVIRONMENT WHERE THEY RECEIVE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, SPIRITUAL DISCIPLESHIP, CARE AND NURTURING.

However, LIV Durban has faced persistent challenges, including frequent power outages and high utility bills. To address these issues, we have initiated a project to supply the village with an affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly electricity supply.

Problem Statement

Regular power outages have proven a great challenge to LIV Durban, as it can last for days at a time. These outages disrupt exams and classes of the children in our online school, affects the operations of the Owethu clinic and welding school, and places strain on the foster homes housing our foster mother and children. Furthermore, the high utility bills have strained the village’s finances. Given that 83% of the village’s annual income comes from donations, reducing these bills is essential to allocate resources more effectively.

Vision

Project Son-Light is designed to bring accessible and dependable electricity to LIV Durban, the Owethu clinic and the Skills development and Training centre. This project aligns with LIV Village’s broader vision of creating self-sustainable, eco-friendly villages that offer a safe and nurturing environment for our children.

Details

G7 Renewable Energies Pty (Ltd) conducted an assessment of LIV Village’s energy needs and provided us with a cost estimate and a Request for Purchase document that supplies all the technical specifications to be met. They have recommended the following system:

  • 203 kW Solar panels
  • 180 kW Inverter
  • 358 kW Batteries

The total cost for the installation and procurement of this system amounts to R4.5 million.

Benefits

This project offers the following benefits:

  • 110% electricity savings
  • 322 Tons of Greenhouse gas emissions savings per year
  • R23 million lifetime utility bill savings

Timeline

While we are raising funds, we are in the process of procuring the equipment as well as finding a reliable installer of the equipment. The goal is to have the system fully operational by the end of March 2024.
