RESCUING THE CHILDREN OF SOUTH AFRICA
“Thokomala” means “warmth” or “care” in isiZulu, and was originally founded by Unilever SA in 2002 with the focus on caring for children affected by HIV/Aids.
In 2018, LIV Thokomala was birthed when LIV officially took over the management of the community-based Thokomala homes across the country.
LIV Thokomala operates 11 community-based foster care homes across the country, strategically located within the heart of each community and allowing the children to stay connected to their local community. Our children are placed through our partners, local child welfare organisations and local courts in each area.
Every home is equipped with a dedicated foster mother who offers love and nurturing care to the children in her care. We support our children holistically by supporting their basic, educational, psychological and medical needs. We also continue support after school with applications for tertiary education, skills development and preparing them for independant living.

LIV Thokomala’s head office is located in Durban and we have 11 homes across the country. We partner with local churches to provide spiritual discipleship for our families, support to our social workers and implement programmes to develop, equip and encourage our children through the journey of life.

If you’re looking for ways to support us financially, joining one of our programmes is an amazing opportunity. All funding is directly applied to care for a child and cover their living costs, education, medical costs and travel to and from school.

By signing up as a volunteer with LIV Thokomala, you have the potential to create a lasting impact on the children we work with. Currently we need tutors to help our children with homework and revision. We are also looking for someone with Marketing skills to help us with our social media.
