On Saturday 20th April we had our first girls’ day of 2024. We met with 21 grade 5 and 6s and spoke about self-worth, confidence, and esteem. We looked at what these mean, where do we get them from (the roots), and what can help and hinder these 3 things. Our pre-teens are an excited bunch, and they were really engaged in the topic, answering many questions, bringing up good points to consider, and showing us their understanding of God as our ‘giver’ of self-worth, esteem, and confidence.
We had a questions and answers time with them, where they asked great questions to the panel, such as ‘How do you get through times of low self-esteem’, ‘Do you love yourself’ and ‘Why do you have to believe in yourself’.
As always, our grade 5 and 6 girls LOVE to do crafts! We found some cool crafts that they took home to help them remember what they had learned. It is sometimes easier to remember information when you have a physical reminder! They decorated glass jars with positive affirmations and inside put lolly-pop sticks with encouraging reminders of self-worth; when they are feeling low, they can grab one and read it to feel encouraged. We also made a mosaic mirror with tiles so that when they look in the mirror, they can choose to speak positivity and God’s truth over themselves.
The highlight of the day was seeing how much they understood that our self-worth ultimately comes from God. Hearing them declare God’s truth over themselves was very special. It was overall a really good day and an important topic to cover with that age.
