There are over 5 million orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa with 12,000 being added every month, and thousands of child-headed households.
It is against this background that LIV was founded, partnering with government, business and the church, with the church being the catalyst to provide urgently needed holistic residential care on a large scale for the most vulnerable of these children. Our core vision is to Rescue a child, Restore a life, Raise a leader, and Release a star.
It started in 1997 when God gave Tich Smith, founder of LIV, a vison to build a village for orphaned and vulnerable children to have a safe home, a mother to love them, food to eat, a school to educate them, and where they will come to know God as their father in heaven.
Tich and his wife Joan, who we call Baba and Gogo, worked in Amaoti township for 8 years helping the community in many ways.
By 2009, 600 children were on the Back-2-School project, life skills training was introduced in the schools, over 30 creches were supported with teacher training and daily food, the sports academy had over 50 soccer teams and 16 young adults from the community were trained to manage these projects. In September 2009, LIV was birthed. An 83 acre farm was purchased, north of Amaoti, next to the community of Cottonlands, and the building of the Village began.
In April 2010, 4000 guests from Government, Business and Churches, came together for the biggest banquet ever held at the Durban ICC. Special guests and speakers included Dr. Zweli Mkhize, Premier of KZN, John Smit, ex SA rugby captain, Shaun Pollock, ex SA cricket captain, and the world renowned Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda. This was the beginning of a special partnership between Government, Business and the Church, working together to tackle the orphan crisis in South Africa and Africa.
In June 2010 the first phase of LIV School and the church went under construction, followed by the first 16 houses. Women’s Day on 9th August 2011 celebrated the arrival of the first mothers and the opening of LIV School with 6 pupils.
2011 was a year of building in many areas, including the Social Services and Homes Management, Education, Marketing and Admin departments, as well as the start of LIV Business to not only provide jobs and skills, but to also contribute towards the sustainability of the Village.
The first Village almost complete: 96 homes, an ECD Centre to cater for 200+ preschoolers, pre-school and primary schools up and running with 9 teachers. They are supported by qualified volunteer physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists. The LIV Social Services and Homes Management departments provide counselling for the children and guidance for the mothers, as well as recruiting and training for future mothers. They are supported by Clinical Psychologists, and a Paediatrician.
Completion of the Multi-purpose hall and Church, with adjacent admin block, to host the 5 Year Celebration. This included a memorable Banquet No 2, for 400 guests, a celebration of how far LIV has come; the Woman of worth conference; Business Breakfast and youth worship concert.
Between May and September, the first LIV Choir toured and went to Johannesburg, the UK and Dubai where they shared the “LIV the Journey” story through vibrant song and dance productions.
LIV has expanded and added LIV Lanseria and LIV Lukhanyiso in Grahamstown to our family. We have also taken over the operational management of 18 foster homes in rural communities spreaded across South Africa. This project is known as LIV Thokomala. We are trusting to launch LIV Cape Town in the near future and have established international fundraising offices in the UK, Canada and USA.
LIV has partnered with various companies to form a Culinary School and a Welding Academy for the unemployed members of our local community.
Successful graduates are employable when they leave, providing them with a new hope and future.
Our programs work with the children in our care and the children in our communities in order to create a brighter future for all.
We place orphaned & vulnerable children into a family environment where they receive unconditional love.
LIV is about FAMILY, teaching each child the value of family life in a loving home and village community, giving them a sense of belonging and purpose.
To quote Mandela: “The effects of HIV/AIDS demands a more sustained approach involving the community and a primary unit of care and nurturing, namely the family. A solid family environment is essential in paving the way towards the realisation of future dreams and aspirations of children.” Up to 6 children are placed in a LIV home with a suitable foster mother and where all their needs are taken care of including a healthy diet, clothing and medical care. The homes are built within a cluster of 8 to 10 houses, modelling the African village life. This helps them to find ‘home’ and close connection within the cluster and in the village itself.
The cost to support a LIV family is R10 000 a month. If you partner with us, you will contribute to a healthy diet for these children, clothing, maintenance for their house, and electricity and water.
By becoming a LIV4Family partner you will receive updates on your family including photos and letters. We encourage our sponsors to become involved in their household by visiting and getting to know the mother and children in that house. It is “adoption from a distance” and you can choose how much you want to be involved.
At LIV we believe that a solid holistic education plays a vital role in giving every LIV child the opportunity to reach their full potential.
LIV2Educate provides an opportunity for you to be able to ‘adopt’ a child and follow his/her progress knowing that you are making a difference in that child’s life.
By partnering with us to educate them you are helping them to step into the amazing life that we believe God has for each and every child.
LIV invites you to educate a child and follow their progress knowing that you are investing in their future. The cost to educate a child at LIV School is R2,000 pm. You can contribute towards this by choosing one of the set payment options below. Giving in this way is tax deductible and you will receive a Section 18A Certificate as well as regular updates on the child’s progress.
At LIV School, children are encouraged to dream about what they can be when they grow up and to have a vision for their future. By you investing in their lives, you are investing in their future.
LIV Creative is a community project started by LIV Village Durban, a children’s village for orphan and vulnerable children.
Purchasing a product will not only help us to create jobs for women in our community and restore their worth but also assist us to raise funds for the village to support the work they do.
Since the inception of the vision we knew that the church had to influence and infiltrate everything we do as a people, living in His Kingdom.
We worship with our whole lives in His presence, His Word, His goodness and are dedicated to prayer.
We seek to bring light to darkness, hope from despair, beauty from ashes and encourage one another into the fullness of life that Jesus gives. We believe in the discipleship of nations that is Biblically based, authentic, contagious and brings Heaven to earth.
Promise land is where our children receive and grow through discipleship from leaders, lead by the Spirit of God.
It is colourful, lively and founded on Gods Word.
As well as children from LIV (+/- 100), many children from Cottonlands (+/- 100) are with us each Sunday. We seek to raise the children in the ways of the Lord, to know who they are as sons and daughters in the Fathers house and how to live lives of purpose and freedom.
It is our story at LIV Village and all who want to embrace the journey are welcome to join us.
Big or small, every little bit helps us provide a better life and hope for a brighter future for our children.
