LIV Welding Academy students recently had the opportunity to visit Aveng Grinaker LTA.

The LIV Welding Students with LIV Training Manager, Anne Meyer
The Afrox students were able to see what the Fabrication Sector of Welding entails. They started with a Safety Induction by Shireen Harris. The Welding Manager, Lorien Chettiar, was our host for the day. We could not have asked for a better host as Lorien’s passion for welding became very apparent. He gave them a brief of Industry expectations. He explained the importance of welders during shutdowns in the Petrochemical Industry.

Some theory before we got practical
In the Welding Workshop, the students had the opportunity to see the various pipes being fabricated and prepared for the shutdown. This was certainly an eye-opener after only working with small test pieces at the Welding Academy. They were given an opportunity to interact with Welders and to inquire about the Workplace. After being treated to lunch, the students were prepared to do some welding. They were shown various test pieces and given the challenge of a 6G Pipe weld. Unfortunately, load shedding got the better of us.
The LIV Welding Academy would like to thank Lorien and the Aveng Grinaker LTA team for allowing us this opportunity to have a peek into the day of a Welder. LIV Training relies on partners in the industry to invest in the lives of our students and grant them opportunities to learn.
Together we truly can make a big difference to the unemployment rates in South Africa.
