On Thursday 16th May LIV school celebrated its 2019 sports day.
The day kicked off with the ECD children competing in their 50m sprints. They had been practising hard in their PE lessons and eagerly lined up to show off their best move in front of the entire school. Enthusiasm carried the young ones forwards as they hurled down the lanes, although sometimes sticking to a straight line proved to be a little challenging. The best race had to be the relay race as the ECD children used their push bikes to compete against one another.
Once the little ones had their fun, the races turned towards the juniors. Boys and girls faced off in 100m, 200m and 400m races. Some gave it everything, pelting down the track with determination in their eyes and lightning crackling after them. Others were content to take a more relaxed approach and chose to take in the beauty of the day and the cheering of the crowd.
The seniors were then on, joined by some LIV4Change with boys and girls performing to very high standards of athletics. This is where records were set and true athletic ability displayed. All boys and girls performed very well with some impressive sub-12-second 100m performances and an impressive 400m from LIV 4 change.
A moment of true excellence that embodied the LIV open day was when one of the sprinters tripped and fell in their race. Instead of leaving him there another boy stopped and helped him up and they finished the race together. This brought cheers from the crowd and a tear to many eyes.
The staff and volunteers races always cause for loads of excitement and laughter. The LIV2Run athletes and Coach Philani were particularly eager, with Coach wearing his full running kit and shoes. He ran the fastest 100m many of us will ever see, whilst the other staff members struggled on after him.
Prize giving commenced and all the athletes who had won their respective races from their age groups were awarded medals and trophies. This also came with the sombre announcement that this would be Coach Lindani’s last sports day at LIV. We are extremely blessed to have had Coach Lindani with us for so many years. The impact he has had on our children is something they will never forget.
We would like to thank all the teachers and staff who helped set up and run the sports day, the children for cooperating and running their best and our coach for being a true sports role model and investing so much time and love in our young athletes.
