UNICEF statistics reveal that there are an estimated 3,7 million orphans in South Africa, 1.85 million of whom have lost one or both parents to AIDS, while a further 150 000 children are believed to be living in child-headed households.
It is against this background that Lungisisa Indlela Village (LIV) was founded. LIV is partnering with government, business and the church, to provide urgently needed holistic residential care, on a large scale, for the hundreds of vulnerable and parentless children, with the core vision to “Rescue a child, Restore a life, Raise a leader and Release a star.”
LIV is about change on a large scale. It exists to raise the next generation of leaders in our nation. Our mission, purpose and passion is to place vulnerable and/or orphaned children into a family environment where they receive unconditional love, spiritual discipleship, care and nurturing and where all their physical needs are taken care of.
We want to equip these children with essential moral values and life skills in order that they truly can live lives that will influence and inspire others.
LIV Village has been in operation since 2010. The first village is located 8km outside Verulam in KwaZulu-Natal, in the community of Cottonlands.
LIV (www.liv-village.com) is a registered non-profit company as defined in the Companies Act, 2008, with a Board of Directors ensuring good governance, transparency and credibility. Deloitte are the appointed auditors.
The first 96 environmentally friendly homes are complete with 33 house mothers at present and a team of relief mothers, as well as others in training, and 170 children in residence. Our LIV school includes an ECD Centre, primary and high school with 22 classrooms, as well as a fully fitted out library, computer room, art room, woodwork room and music centre, with dedicated and talented teachers.
The LIV Children’s choir is gaining stardom and being invited to perform at key cultural events across the region, and travelled the UK in 2016. This was life transforming for them. Our nurses, psychologists, counsellors and social workers are facilitating our vision of holistic healing for our children in the LIV Health Care Centre.
We have also opened the LIV Owethu Community Clinic which will provide primary health care for the community surrounding the village. The Church/Multi-purpose Hall is complete, and the Finance, Administration and Marketing teams are housed in the adjacent office block.
Our vegetable gardens are flourishing as we work towards self-sustainability and in February 2018 we installed a Waste Water Treatment Plant to the premises. The LIV Culinary School was started at the beginning of 2016 and The LIV Welding Training Centre opened in September 2017.
Both of these ventures will aim to provide future employment for both our LIV children when they grow up, and for our local community in need. Further training is planned for as we increase the training centre. The LIV Church with Promise Land Kids Church on the village is thriving and making a meaningful impact on the neighbouring community in Cottonlands.
LIV Business has been established to focus on our mission of being a self-sustainable village; to provide skills training and employment, including future vocational training, for the immediate and surrounding communities, and for the children as they prepare to finish their schooling.
The core purpose of each business is to contribute positively to the running of LIV Village, that we may realise our calling of building many villages across South Africa.
LIV Business is owned 100% by LIV Village, thereby making the children full beneficiaries of all profits from the business. This also means, through Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B BBEE) legislation, the businesses that are started and owned by LIV, are level 1 / category A B-BBEE contributors, making us the ideal organisation to partner with.
Some of the businesses that we have established are LIV Moringa, LIV Agriculture, LIV Labels and LIV Clean. LIV Village in itself employs 96 people from the local community and within its portfolio of businesses a further 1,200 people are currently employed.
