LIV Village, in association with Ethekwini Municipality, hosted the Fun in Reading event on the 7th of March 2018.
The statistics for illiteracy in South Africa are worrying indeed. The Fun in Reading programme aims to cultivate a love for reading from an early age. A mobile library keeps children busy for hours and by means of interactively acting out stories, this is usually a fun-filled morning and a very effective way to demonstrate that reading is anything but boring.
Educational Psychologist, Jackie Rahm, did an interesting presentation on the benefits of reading and how it stimulates imagination and increases emotional intelligence and empathy. It is also very interesting to know that individuals who enjoy reading for pleasure, are more successful in maintaining healthy relationships. Only 30 minutes of reading for pleasure on a daily basis, can decrease stress levels by 69%.
The children at LIV enjoy reading but there are limited resources available, especially for the older children who knows what genres they enjoy. If you would like to donate books (for all ages) to LIV School, please contact info@liv-village.com. You can also join or LIV2Educate programme and invest in the lives of our future leaders.
