At LIV Village School the children have been learning about the importance of taking care of our planet. At LIV we are passionate about raising the next generation of leaders in South Africa, and we know how crucial it is for our leaders to prioritise looking after the environment.
At LIV the lessons and activities around Earth Day were not limited to a single day.
LIV ECD dedicated Term 2 to learning about how we can best look after our Earth. With Earth Day on the 22 April, we started the term by learning about “Farming God’s Way”. We spent the week leading up to Earth Day, with a short lesson each day on how to start our gardens and how to best look after them. We were so privileged to have a team from Every Nation City Bowl, who sponsored and started the process of making our ECD gardens.
Finally, the big day arrived where we could plant our seeds. Our little farmers were very excited to get going and worked hard to prepare the soil and plant. We planted beetroot, spinach, spring onion seedlings and green bean seeds. We are very grateful to RTS Greytown for donating the seedlings and seeds. We ended a very busy day with some well-deserved cake.
Part of our theme was also discussing Recycling and how it can help our Earth. We asked the children to collect recycling items for 2 weeks, which they thoroughly enjoyed. We then learnt how to sort it into; glass, metal, plastic and paper. With the recycled materials we collected, all our classes made crafts and some even created their own toys. We displayed all this at the school’s Earth Day Celebration on the 13 May 2022. One of our assistant teachers, Londeka Shangase, created a beautiful two-piece outfit for the celebration worn by our student, Anitha.
The LIV School classes also started the Earth Day activities early, by planting bean seeds, and observing and documenting how they grow over the weeks leading up to Earth Day. “We spent time collecting recyclable materials such as bottle lids, empty toilet rolls and recyclable paper to use for art projects. Our theme was ‘Look after our earth’, which specifically focused on the idea that it is our responsibility to look after the plants, trees and oceans, making sure we recycle, re-use and re-plant.”

TREE PLANTING CEREMONY
On the 13th May we had our LIV Earth Day Tree Planting Ceremony, where Leitch Landscapes generously donated trees to plant in our school. It was an exciting celebration with songs and poems from the children, displays of their recycling themed artworks and of course, the planting of the trees. Children, Mums and staff all gathered to admire the children’s handiwork and creativity. Our school proudly have 12 new trees planted in the playground and around the school grounds.
