About LIV Lukhanyiso
“Lukhanyiso” means light in isiXhosa and that is what we want to be, a light to the city of Grahamstown/Makhanda and to the nation and to point people to the Father in heaven.
Just as it says in Matthew 5:14-16: “You are a light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”.
How it all began
Lara’s Journey
Lara founded LIV Lukhanyiso after having met LIV Village Founder, Tich Smith in 2011 at a Watoto Choir evening in Ballito where he shared the LIV Vision for South Africa.
It was here that Lara’s heart was captured with LIV and its vision. Since then she has actively, patiently and faithfully been raising funds and creating awareness for LIV and LIV Lukhanyiso.

In 2013 Lara packed up her successful corporate career to pursue a God given dream – to run a marathon on every continent in the world in one year to raise awareness and funds to buy land and build a LIV Village in her home town of Grahamstown (now named Makhanda). Lara completed all seven marathons and raised R200,000 in the process.
In 2014 the perfect piece of land (33ha) was found for the village, but unfortunately it was not for sale. Undeterred, Lara approached the land owner and offered the R200 000 as a deposit to purchase the land, assuring the owner that she would raise the balance of the funds to purchase the land. In August of that same year, the land owner contacted Lara and donated the land for LIV Lukhanyiso.
Current Activities
We have a small team on the ground working together to bring God’s wonderful plan of hope and redemption to the community of Grahamstown/Makhanda.
LIV Lukhanyiso is still in its infancy, but we celebrate every step we take towards the village being a reality. Here are some of our achievements to date, and well as our key focus areas.
Achievements To Date
Land
- 33ha of land donated by local Grahamstown business, Makana Brick.
- Land subdivision and rezoning process is underway.
- Two highly experienced town planners from CITEPLAN, Johannesburg have volunteered their services to assist with the necessary planning requirements.
Partners and Support
- Partnerships are being developed with existing organisations who have paved the way in taking care of the orphan and vulnerable children in our province.
- Many businesses, schools, churches and individuals are already investing time, energy and resources into the LIV Lukhanyiso vision and mission.
Current Projects
- On the ground support for one LIV Thokomala house in the Eastern Cape.
- We were going to be working with both but that has now changed.
- Lukhanyiso Arts and Crafts – launched in 2018. A community member who herself was rescued as an orphan at the age of three, has been up-skilled in the areas of sewing and entrepreneurship.
- Awareness and marketing – Whenever the opportunity arises, we share the LIV Lukhanyiso dream and vision.
Key Focus Areas
- Completing the first phase of Land Use Rights Activities, to ensure that our Village is built in the best conditions, suitable to raise children who thrive.
- To grow and strengthen our relationships with the Grahamstown community at large.
- Marketing and fundraising to build partnerships and resources for phase one of the Village.
- Raise salaries for the two full time operation team
