LIV Clean is touching lives.
What started out as a few lessons to sew sheets and covers for the examination couches in the LIV Health Center on site, turned out to be a bigger life lesson on how to bless others with the works of our hands.
In 2017 Dr Gerlinde Mandersloot, physician at LIV Health Care Center and Owethu Community Clinic, needed new covers for the examination couches in the center. A seamstress herself, she taught a volunteer to sew a few sheets and covers but this soon became a basic sewing class to a few of the LIV Clean ladies working at the village. The ladies who choose to take part in Dr Mandersloot’s sewing classes, are committed to coming in earlier and leaving work later every day so that they can have a longer lunch and attend these sessions. The ladies are proficient in sewing a variety of items including bed linen, curtains, blinds and they have also made beautiful dresses.
Recently, the ladies decided to make blankets from donated fleece fabric to donate these to the needy at Osindisweni Hospital.
Osindisweni Hospital is a district hospital in the eThekwini health district. The hospital is located in the Buffelsdraai area on the border of Ndwedwe district, 9kms from Verulam and 40kms from central Durban.
Like most hospitals in KZN, Osindisweni is under resourced and often blankets cannot be provided to patients. Patients, however, can bring their own bedding but the patients treated at this hospital are from the impoverished areas of Ndwedwe, Cottonlands and Verulam and rarely have blankets to bring.
Our LIV Clean ladies decided that they would like to donate 50 brand new blankets to needy patients in the hospital, which they can then take home once they have been discharged.
We are so proud of the initiative that was taken by these mama’s to use their skills to bless others.
The LIV model is long term cluster foster care, where children have a sense of belonging in a supportive community. We place orphaned and vulnerable children into a family environment with a trained foster mother to love them, a school to educate them, and where they receive spiritual discipleship, care and nurturing. LIV Clean is a partner of LIV Village.
